Rehua Marae Visit

Rehua Wharenui.

We learnt that it is the land before the Wharenui that is the Marae. But these days we use the word Marae to describe the whole place not just the land but the buildings also.

South Island panels.

We learnt that the carvings at then front and back of the Marae are from  the South Island tribes ad the carvings down the side of the Wharenui are from the North Island tribes - its the reverse if  you are at a Marae in the North Island.

St Martins Kaumatua: Henare Edwards

Henare shared lots of information about the marae - it was really interesting.

 Henare Edwards' carving

Henare is Taiao's Dad - this is the wall panel that represents his tribe and ancestor.

This is the Tekoteko (ancestor) who represents the Rehua Marae

Room 5 at the end of our visit - we all had such a great time :)

The whole junior syndicate outside the wharenui when we are about to preform a haka!

We all had such a great time at Rehua Marae and hope to visit again - a BIG thank you to all the parents who were able to join us!
